What to do when you are involved in a Road Accident

Being involved in a road accident is a traumatic experience. Whether you are the driver of the vehicle or a passenger, the impact does not lessen. Trying to think of what to do when you are in shock can be daunting.

Here are 4 simple steps to follow:

1. Stop your vehicle & put on your emergency Hazard lights:

It is required by law to immediately stop your vehicle safely and as soon as possible. Put on your emergency Hazard lights to indicate to other road users that there is an emergency situation.

2. Assess the situation & help the injured:

Do not move any vehicles unless they are a danger to other road users. Call emergency services if needed and see how you can help the injured safely. Do not move any seriously injured individuals. Wait for emergency services.

3. Record all details possible:

If you have a smartphone take photos or a video. Make sure to get the full details of the other party. i.e., Full names, ID no, car registration no, make, model & colour of the vehicle. Date and time of the accident. Details of any eyewitnesses.

4. Report the accident to the Police:

It is required by law to report any road accident to the Police within 24 hours. You will need to go to the nearest police station if the police do not come to the scene.

We wish you all safe travels!
